07/01/14 0641 Spent a great weekend in the hills of Healdsburg with friends. Hot hot days in a cool cool pool and nights filled with delicious foods and mornings lavished with hot coffee and great conversations and an abundance of bacon. Now, back to work after dropping Jenn off... on a very very foggy day in SF
07/02/14 0650 Wow... guess who overslept today... it was one of those awakenings that jolts. Snapped awake and the sky looks way too bright. Glanced at my wrist watch and hit the ground running -- 0555 hours. The cats, for once, didn't wake me up (or tried and i just shoved them away, in the foggy recesses of my mind, there was a faint memory of Edi trying to eat my hair). So, an hour late for the photo... but it might have been a godsend as the fog had an extra hour to lift, making it easier for the stitching of the panorama. Heard on the drive in that there is a 200 some acre grass fire (35% contained) burning in Napa. Mandatory evacuations and all.... the fire season has started in earnest.
07/03/14 0556 A nice cool morning... a seagull my only companion on the vista point... the smell of the sea is strong
07/07/14 0640 Monday, fog day... it was the consistency of pea soup out in the bay today, though the morning sky driving up along the peninsula promised such radiant colours of a bright sunrise through variable density and quality of clouds. At the bridge, it was just the fog, the fog forlorn foghorn (how i do love it's voice), and a ship and pilot vessel in the cottony grey... had to back off on the zoom (18mm) so that i can get points that the panorama stitching program can use...
07/08/14 0533 An early day for me... couldn't sleep and didn't want to fight for sporadic five minute dozes. The wind was howling at the vista point, shaking the car between fearsome gusts. The fog, thick and dense. Somewhere in the grey mist is a ship, her lights flickering in and out of the wispy cloak. Surprisingly, no fog horn to be heard this morning.
07/09/14 0531 - 0554 Today was one of the days where i probably should've just taken one series and headed off to work. The fact that the bay was free of pea soup fog, well, at least not in the lower altitudes, swayed me to stay and take a timed series of panos. There is something magical about the bay, in the early pre-dawn, with the lit city and bay bridge in the background. i just couldn't leave.
And, just for a sense of completeness, and also to get some blood circulating while i stood in the wind, i took two series of panos at 18mm, with a time separation of 15 minutes.
07/10/14 0547 Well, guess who overslept today? Wanted to capture the predawn cityscape again but was thwarted by Morpheus... who didn't even have the courtesy of leaving me with some memory of what had transpired... ah well.
07/11/14 0529 - 0543 This morning, the bay was socked in by wind blown, wet, misty fog. So wet, in fact, that my kilt was soaked through by the time i returned to the car. The fog and the mist was quite fantastic on the photos though. The blur of the lights you see off yonder in SF is not due to my trembling in the wet cold morning air. The blur is actually a testament to how thick and heavy the mist was.
and, because it is a Friday, also took a pano at 18mm
07/14/14 0533 and 0546 This week, Jenn heads down to Orange County on Tuesday so i was able to get a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge and SF Bay in the early morning light. As it happens, as i was shooting, the fog rolled (blown?) in from outside of the gate. Rolling over the Marin Headlands and drifting to conceal the top of the Golden Gate Bridge's northern tower. All this in a span of 13 minutes.
07/15/14 0640 What was a glorious sunrise of red, orange and gold was a fogged in morning at the Golden Gate Bridge. It is one of the reasons why San Francisco is such a wonderful place and why the Golden Gate is such a wonderful area. That being said, the fog made the 35mm shots difficult to stitch, so, once again, i resorted to the 18mm shots.
07/16/14 0640 A balmy night leads to a wet and foggy morning at the North Vista Point. The wet dense fog felt nice this morning, doing its best to keep me awake and on task. The city slumbers beneath its blanket of gray. Shots were taken at 18mm, as there would not be easily distinguishable landmarks for the stitching software to work properly.
07/17/14 0539 Another wet morning, roadways and horizontal surfaces were all slick with moisture, giving the scene a feel of a sinister damp. Put on my fleece vest to stay warm but was soaked through by the time i took the second series of panos. A cruise ship had entered the gate as i drove over the bridge, its lights a warm display on the dark water. By the time i was ready to shoot, it was already near the cruise ship terminals down by the Ferry Building/Bay Bridge. In the photo, it was a mere spot of lights.
and, since it was foggy, here is a pano from 18mm shots.
07/18/14 0548 and 0558 in 18mm; Friday, kilt day... which i think threw the Chinese couple at the vista point off a tad bit. He had a nice camera with a lovely long lens (yes, i have lens envy). She kept her head down and didn't make eye contact. When i pulled up and got out, it was, in fact, he who called out a hearty "Good Morning!". i replied in kind and then kept to myself. Too early to be friendly and happy...
07/21/14 0543 TO 0556 A beautiful morning on the SF Bay today. Clear views of the city and the bridge with fog up high and low cloud levels. A lovely light glowed from the Bay Bridge and SF proper. A blush of red colours the skies above. Happy Monday.
07/22/14 0538 to 0555 Oh, what a glorious morning this morning was... for photography and low tech time lapse. To be able to witness pre-dawn transitioning to dawn and the sky clearing was wonderful. If only i could've caught some of the electrical storm that was brewing up and down the peninsula! To think... lightning strikes at the gate!
and, just because... two 18mm panos:
07/23/14 0546 to 0556 So i had a bit of trouble getting up this morning... but was treated to yet another clear day on the bay. The water was as smooth as glass, a good day to be out on the water dangling a line over the side... sigh
07/24/14 0530 to 0550 We have a warm weekend to look forward to... and the Bay complied with another clear morning... well, not exactly all clear mind you, but the fog was high and the view was not obscured. Since i am taking tomorrow off to tend to various pet related issues, i thought i'd spend a little extra time to observe the changing of the sky and light... right as i left, a ship came sailing under the bridge... a twinge within me wistfully regretted leaving early...
07/28/14 0641 Wow, July is almost over... how time flies indeed!
07/29/14 0547 to 0555 The weather these past few days has just been burning hot. The good thing is, the Golden Gate has been beautiful to photograph. Sleep comes poorly when the weather is warm. The cats are restless and restless cats equates to uneven and perilous sleep... heh... ah... the joys of being a feline parent.
Since today there was such a high degree of difference in the light, i also took a 18mm pano for kicks
07/30/14 0548 Wow, i've never seen it so foggy at the Golden Gate Bridge North Vista Point. The visibility was restricted, every light had a misty halo that surrounded it. Perhaps the weather will be cooling off? That would be rather nice... the number of hot days we've had this year has been rather trying on this heat wimp.
07/31/14 0531 to 0553 Last day of July... can't believe that 2014 is half over... well, a bit more than half really... how many shopping days till Christmas? Unfortunately, yet another foggy morning... some might say that it is even foggier than yesterday... yup, soupy. Though thick, one can still appreciate the coming of the morning light i think... alright, time to make a page for August...
